Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Collapses

Must read

Nigeria experienced yet another national grid collapse on Wednesday, plunging many parts of the country into darkness.

Reports indicate that the grid suffered a system disturbance shortly after 11:00 AM, causing a massive loss in power generation.

Power Generation Drops to Zero

At 11:00 AM, the national grid was generating 4,064 megawatts, but by 12:00 PM, this had dropped drastically to 1,203 megawatts, and by 1:00 PM, power generation hit 0.00 megawatts, leading to a complete outage across various regions.

Official Response & Power Restoration Efforts

The spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Ndidi Mbah, has yet to respond to inquiries as she was reportedly attending an official function. However, sources within power generation companies confirmed that a general grid disturbance occurred on Wednesday morning, affecting multiple power plants.

On its official X (Twitter) handle, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) acknowledged the outage, stating:

“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 AM today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas. While gradual restoration has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Recurring Grid Failures

This marks the first national grid collapse of 2025 following a minor line-tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, and over the last 10 years, there have been more than 100 recorded grid failures.

The frequent grid collapses continue to raise concerns about Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and the urgent need for more reliable power generation and distribution systems.

As restoration efforts continue, Nigerians remain hopeful that power supply will be fully restored soon.
